Message Review

We are not self-defined, but God defined. One of the ways that God defines us is a justified. Justification means that when God looks at us, he sees us as blameless, righteous, and holy. You cannot be justified by your heritage, and you can’t earn your justification. Justification is a gift from God and nothing more. Your justification has been made possible by Jesus’s death and resurrection. He paid your debt to make blameless in God’s eyes.

Main Point | You are justified with God through what Jesus did for you on the cross alone.

Scripture References | Luke 18:9-14; Galatians 2:15-16; Romans 3:21-24

Questions

  • Pastor Matt talked about the biggest diamond ever discovered. What would you do if you had the chance to hold it, or better if you had discovered it?

  • If someone asked you to define Justification in your own words, what would you say?

  • Pastor Matt brought up the idea of the “clean slate” from the movie the Dark Night Rising. Why do you think people relate to wanting to find a device like this that would wipe out your past and set you right for your future, even if they are seeking Jesus?

  • Read Galatians 2: 15-16. What do these verses say about how we are justified. 9What do these verses say about how people try and justify themselves?

  • Pastor Matt had us go through an exercise around the 10 commandments. What did this say about our ability to make ourselves right before God?

  • Read Romans 3: 21-24. How does this verse say we need to do to be made right with God?

  • You slate being wiped clean, your bill being paid in full was made possible by the death and resurrection of Jesus. Knowing what Jesus went through to die on the cross to pay your debt, how does that make you feel about the gift he gave you?

  • Read the parable in Luke 18:9-14. What does this passage say about how we should approach God. Why did Jesus say out of the two the tax collector went home justified?

  • How would your life be different if you rested in the fact that through Jesus alone you are justified.

Challenge Question | Have you accepted the gift from God that made you justified to Him?

Application

This week spend time resting in the mercy of Jesus and that fact that because of Him you are made right with God. Focus this week that nothing you can do or add can make you more or less justified if you have accepted the free Gift given through Jesus on the cross.

Focus Passage: Luke 18:9-14
