Message Review

Two disciplines are vital to growing our relationship with Jesus: praying and reading the Bible. In week two of the Vital series, we talked about reading scripture and discovered that the purpose of the Bible is not primarily for our information but for our transformation.

Main Point: The purpose of the Bible is not primarily for our information, but for our transformation.

Scripture References: Matthew 7:24-27; 2 Timothy 3:15-17

Bible Study

The focus Bible passage from the sermon was 2 Timothy 3:10-17. Before going to the Sermon Discussion Questions, study the passage by reading through it together, then talk through it using the Inductive Bible Study Method questions that follow:

  • Context: Discuss the context of this passage (Use the Bible Overview to learn the context)

  • Observation: What do you notice in this passage? What words or phrases stick out to you? And why?

  • Interpretation: What was the author’s original intent in this passage? What main point(s) was he trying to communicate, and why is that important?

  • Application: What is one key takeaway or insight you had from this passage? How can or should you apply it to your life?

  • Questions: What questions/tensions do you have from this passage that you would like to discuss?

Discussion Questions

  • What is the Bible?  What is God’s intended purpose of the Bible?

  • Ronnie said Scripture is the primary way God interacts with us.  Do you believe that?  Why or why not?

  • Do you consistently read the Bible?  Why or why not?

  • Read 2 Timothy 3:15-17 as a group. According to the Apostle Paul, what is the purpose of the Scripture?

  • Based on what Paul wrote, Ronnie said the purpose of the Bible is not primarily for our information but for our transformation.  How do we read the Bible through the relational lens of transformation instead of through the religious lens of information?

  • Read Matthew 7:24-27 as a group.  What main point(s) was Jesus trying to communicate?

    • What does Jesus warn us against in this passage?

  • Ronnie introduced the Inductive Bible Study Method which is: (1) Observation (“What do I see?”), (2) Interpretation (“What is the author’s original intent?”), and (3) Application (“What should I do?”).

    • Did you find this helpful?

    • What questions do you have about how to utilize the Inductive Bible Study Method?

  • In what ways have you read the Bible that has impacted you and helped you grow in your relationship with Jesus? (ex. Studying a book of the Bible or a person or topic in the Bible.)
