Message Review

Jesus doesn’t call us to be believers or behavers; He invites us to be His followers. The defining characteristic of following Jesus is surrender. Following Jesus starts and ends with surrender.

Main Point: Following Jesus starts and ends with surrender.

Discussion Questions

  • What were your initial thoughts or takeaways from the sermon?

  • What do you want more than anything right now? How does what you wish to influence your thoughts, decisions, and priorities?

  • When you hear the word "surrender," what feelings or thoughts come to mind? Why do you think those are the first things that came to mind?

  • Ronnie said that following Jesus starts and ends with surrender.  What does it mean to surrender to Jesus?  Why does following Jesus start and end with surrender?

  • How do your prayers typically sound? What do you spend most of your time praying for when you pray?

  • Read Matthew 6:9-10 as a group.  Why did Jesus instruct us to pray for God’s will to be done before we ask for anything else? How does this challenge the way you typically pray?

  • Read Matthew 26:6-16 as a group. Ronnie said that Jesus was always a means to an end for Judas.  What did Judas want from Jesus, and what ultimately led him to betray Jesus?

  • Read Matthew 27:1-5 as a group.

    • Why was Judas seized with remorse?

    • What did Judas do when what he wanted didn’t go as he expected?  Why do you think he responded in that way?

  • When what we want conflicts with what God wants, we will surrender to God’s will or try to impose our will on Him.  Can you think of a time you either surrendered to God’s will or tried to impose your will?  What was the outcome, and how did that impact you and your relationship with Jesus?

  • Remember your answer to the question, “What do you want?”.  Have you surrendered that to Jesus?

    • If so, explain how you have.

    • If not, what would it look like for you to begin to surrender it to Him?
