Message Review

In today's world, we are witnessing an increasing polarization where people are being divided into opposing groups. People are taking a stand on their positions, divided from people who disagree. This kind of division is not conducive to glorifying God. Throughout this series, we’re looking at four issues that have created polarization within the Church. One of those issues is sex. Nothing has polarized people like sex has.

Main Point: God created marriage. God created sex. God created sex for marriage.

Scripture References: Genesis 1:27, 2:18-24; Matthew 19:4-6; 1 Corinthians 6:16-20

Bible Study

The focus Bible passage from the sermon was 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. Before going to the Sermon Discussion Questions, study the passage by reading through it together, then talk through it using the Inductive Bible Study Method questions that follow:

  • Context: Discuss the context of this passage (i.e. when it was written, who wrote it, who it was written to, what was going on before and/or after this specific passage, etc.)

  • Observation: What do you notice in this passage?  What words or phrases stick out to you? And why?

  • Interpretation: What was the author’s original intent in this passage?  What main point(s) was he trying to communicate, and why is that important?

  • Application: What is one key takeaway or insight you had from this passage? How can or should you apply it to your life?

  • Questions: What questions/tensions do you have from this passage that you would like to discuss?

Discussion Questions

  • What were your initial thoughts or takeaways from the sermon and why?

  • Nothing has polarized people like the phrase “sexual immorality”. Why do you think the phrase “sexual immorality” generates such strong reactions from people, and is causing such a polarizing divide?

  • Read the following 4 passages as a group, then discuss the questions that follow: (1) Genesis 1:27, (2) Genesis 2:18-24, (3) Matthew 19:4-6, (4) 1 Corinthians 6:16-20

    • What similarities do you notice in these passages? What words or phrases stick out, and why?

    • What would you conclude is Creator God’s created intent for sex?

    • Who would you conclude Creator God created sex for?

    • How do you think the writers of Scripture would define sexual immorality? Why?

  • Ronnie said God’s created design for marriage is to be between one man and one woman, and God’s created intent for sex is to be within the context of marriage. Do you agree with this, and why or why not? Is your point of view based on Biblical truth, or something else?

  • Ronnie defined sexual immorality as any act of sex outside of Creator God’s created intent for it. Read 1 Corinthians 6:18 again. Why did Paul instruct followers of Christ to flee from sexual immorality? According to Paul, how is the sin of sexual immorality different from other sins?

  • How do you think choosing sexual sin might impact you, your relationships with others, or your relationship with God?

  • Regarding sexual immorality, in what practical ways can you stand in the messy middle with people who disagree?

  • Ronnie said sexual immorality is a surrender issue. Are you glorifying God with your sexual behavior? If not, how do you think Jesus may be inviting you to surrender and follow Him?
