Message Review

Many people have come to equate Christianity with believing in all the right things and behaving in all the right ways. However, Jesus didn’t call us believers or behavers; His invitation was, “Follow Me.” Following Jesus happens one step at a time.

Main Point: Following Jesus happens one next step at a time.

Scripture References: Matthew 4:18-22; Luke 5:1-11; Isaiah 40:30-31

Bible Study      

The focus Bible passage from the sermon was Luke 5:1-11. Before going to the Sermon Discussion Questions, study the passage by reading through it together, then talk through it using the following Inductive Bible Study Method questions that follow:

  • Context: Discuss the context of this passage (Use the Bible Overview to learn the context)

  • Observation: What do you notice in this passage? What words or phrases stick out to you? And why?

  • Interpretation: What was Jesus’ original intent in this passage? What main point(s) was he trying to communicate, and why is that important?

  • Application: What is one key takeaway or insight you had from this passage? How can or should you apply it to your life?

  • Questions: What questions/tensions do you have from this passage that you want to discuss?

Discussion Questions

  • What were your initial thoughts or takeaways from the sermon?

  • If someone asked you this question, what would your response be? – How does following Jesus begin and continue?

    • Why is that your answer to this question?

    • What does the fact that other people answer this question very differently than you reveal?

  • Read Matthew 4:18-22 then read Luke 5:1-11.

    • These two passages record the same event told from two different angles.  What do you notice in Luke’s account of this story that Matthew didn’t include?

    • What Peter addressed Jesus as “Master” in Luke 5:5 and “LORD” in Luke 5:8.  What’s the difference between these two ways Peter addressed Jesus?  What happened that made Peter change how he viewed Jesus?

    • Why did Peter, Andrew, James, and John leave everything to follow Jesus?  What led to them having enough faith in Jesus to do that? 

  • Ronnie said, “Following Jesus happens one next step at a time.”  What does that mean, and what does that look like? 

  • Ronnie talked about four different phases of following Jesus: Sit and listen phase, loan him the boat phase, take him fishing phase, and the leave your nets phase. Which phase do you believe you are currently in, and why? What is Jesus inviting you to do?

  • What is your next step?  How can we, as a community, support and help you take the next step Jesus invites you to take?

  • If you have put your faith in Jesus, are you actively following Him?
