Message Review

Jesus doesn’t call us to be believers or behavers; He invites us to be His followers. The people who have the hardest time following Jesus are those who have more than someone else—whether that be power, authority, influence, or possessions. Instead of leveraging what we have for our benefit, Jesus calls His followers to leverage themselves for the benefit of others.

Main Point: Jesus’ followers leverage themselves for the benefit of others.

Scripture References: Mark 10:32-37, 41-45; John 13:3-5, 13-17

Discussion Questions

  • What were your initial thoughts or takeaways from the sermon?

  • What are some positive and negative experiences you have had with people who have more of something than you do?

  • Ronnie said that the people who have the hardest time following Jesus are those who have more money, power, influence, clothes, popularity, ability, etc., than someone else.  Do you agree or disagree?  Why?

  • Read Mark 10:35-45.

    • James and John asked to sit at Jesus’ right and left hand because they wanted more power and status. How did Jesus respond to their request, and what does His response reveal about true greatness in His kingdom?

    • Jesus redefined greatness by teaching that authentic leadership is about serving others. How does His teaching in Mark 10:43-45 challenge our natural tendencies when we have more than others?

  • Read John 13:3-17 as a group.

    • What stands out to you about the way Jesus used His power and authority?

  • Jesus leveraged all of Himself for our benefit. Like Jesus, His followers leverage themselves for the benefit of others. How can our pride make it challenging to live this out, and how does pride show up in our daily lives?

  • How can we practically leverage ourselves to benefit others in our daily lives (work, family, church, relationships)?

  • Ronnie said, a simple question we can ask to know how to live this out is, “What can I do to help?” Who in your life right now could benefit from you asking, “What can I do to help?” How can you act on that this week?
