Message Review

According to Paul in 1 Timothy 6:17-18, the way to be rich is to give generously, serve sacrificially, and love extravagantly.  This past Sunday we finished the Be Rich series by discussing the third way to be rich: loving extravagantly.  We discovered Jesus’ extravagant love FOR us requires extravagant love FROM us.

Main Point: Jesus’ extravagant love FOR us requires extravagant love FROM us.

Scripture References: 1 Timothy 6:18; John 13:34-35; 1 John 3:16; Ephesians 5:21

Bible Study

The focus Bible passage from the sermon was John 13:31-35. Before going to the Sermon Discussion Questions, study the passage by reading through it together, then talk through it using the Inductive Bible Study Method questions that follow:

  • Context: Discuss the context of this passage (i.e. when it was written, who wrote it, who it was written to, what was going on before and/or after this specific passage, etc.)

  • Observation: What do you notice in this passage?  What words or phrases stick out to you? And why?

  • Interpretation: What was the author’s original intent in this passage?  What main point(s) was he trying to communicate, and why is that important?

  • Application: What is one key takeaway or insight you had from this passage? How can or should you apply it to your life?

  • Questions: What questions/tensions do you have from this passage that you would like to discuss?

Discussion Questions

  • What were your initial thoughts or takeaways from the sermon and why?

  • How do most people define the word love?

  • Do you think this is different than how Jesus defines love?  If so, how?

  • Read John 13:34-35 again as a group. According to Jesus, how do people recognize that we are one of His followers?

  • On Sunday, Pastor Ronnie said, “Following Jesus requires we love extravagantly, and that Jesus’ extravagant love FOR us requires extravagant love FROM us.  How has Jesus loved us, and why is that so extravagant?

  • Read 1 John 3:16 as a group. According to the Apostle John, how are we to love one another, and why? do we love others just as Jesus first loved us?  What does it practically look like to lay down our lives for one another?

  • In Ephesians 5:21, Paul introduced us to the principle of Mutual Submission.  Read that verse together as a group. What does Paul mean by “submit to one another”, and what does that practically look like?

  • Based on what Jesus said in John 13:24-25, John wrote in 1 John 3:16, and the principle Paul gave in Ephesians 5:21, what does it look like to extravagantly love one another, and why does Jesus require it from His followers?

  • Pastor Ronnie introduced us to a question we can pray to identify how Jesus may be leading us to love extravagantly.  The question is, what can I do for them?  Who is it hard for you to love right now?  What can you do for them this week?
