Message Review

During the Passover meal, Jesus broke bread and pass around a cup saying, this is my body and blood which is given for you. He then instructed his disciples to eat the bread and drink the cup in remembrance of him. This account has become known as the Lord’s Supper, Communion or the Eucharist, and has been a big source for disagreement in the church throughout history.

Main Point | Jesus’ sacrifice can never be repeated, but must always be remembered.

Scripture References | Luke 22:19-20; John 19:30; Romans 6:9-10; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Challenge Question | How should I respond to Jesus’ once and for all sacrifice for me today?

Questions

  • What did your faith look like growing up? What routines and traditions were a part of your journey?

  • If you have history with the Protestant Church, what have you been taught regarding the Lord’s Supper or communion? If you were part of the Catholic Church, what were you taught about Mass and the Eucharist?

  • Whether Protestant or Catholic, did you ever hold any guilt or shame when it came to Communion/Eucharist?

  • This week’s topic centered on the biblical truth and purpose surrounding why we take communion. Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. In this passage, why and when did Jesus say we are to “take communion?” Is there anything new you learned about Communion/Eucharist on Sunday?

  • In 1 Corinthians 11:25, Jesus uses the words “new covenant.” And in John 19:30, Jesus said, “it is finished.” What is the significance of these words for every follower of Jesus?

  • Out of everything that was taught on Sunday about communion, the Lord’s Supper, or the Eucharist, is there anything that you are still in the gray on that you would like to dig into more, or still have tension with? What is it and what will you do to take next steps?

Next Step Challenge

Read Romans 6:9-10. Pastor Ronnie challenged everyone to ask this question: How should I respond to Jesus’ once for all sacrifice for me today? Every day, ask that question and respond. Furthermore, since there is freedom around when we take communion, why not have some friends over for dinner in the next couple of weeks and celebrate communion together or do this in your T-Life Group!
