Message Review
There is darkness in this world at every turn. No one is debating that. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” This statement presents a dilemma: either choose to follow the light and find life or continue to walk in darkness that ultimately leads to death.
Main Point | We all choose to live in the light of life or the death of darkness.
Scripture References | John 8:12-14, John 8:20, Genesis 1:1-3, Colossians 1:13, Psalm 139:11-12, John 3:19-21
Challenge Question | Are you living in the light of life or the death of darkness?
Questions
Have you ever thought about the concept that we will either walk in darkness or walk in the light? What does it mean to walk in darkness? How about light? Give examples.
Read John 1:1-5. Who are these verses talking about?
Read John 3:19-21. When you look around, where do you see people loving darkness today?
One thing light does is exposes what is or has been hidden in darkness, including what is in our hearts. Why are we so tempted to remain in darkness rather than letting the light of Jesus expose the darkness? How do you feel knowing that God is in the business of bringing light and life to the dark places in our lives? Is that intimidating or inviting? Why?
Pastor Matt used a quote by Matt Chandler who said, “secrets are the darkness in which death and destruction grow.” What does this mean? How have you seen this play out in your own life?
Have you ever been “found out?” Have you ever proactively “revealed something in your life to someone that you needed free from? (Think secret sin). Which was easier or better?
Next Step Challenge
Darkness is exposed in one of two ways; 1) With your proactive confession, or 2) God “outing” you. Both will be tough, but both will be wrapped in God’s mercy and lead to freedom. Read 1 John 1:9. What’s your next step?
