For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” – Luke 19:10

Message Recap

In a world where churches are often known by what they’re against, we want to be known by what we’re FOR. And we are FOR people because God is. The problem is, we often take the wrong approach toward people who disagree with us, and stand firm by our positions (morally, spiritually, doctrinally, etc.) As a result, a gap gets formed between the church and the rest of the world. We must think different. Not about what our positions are, but about where we are taking that stance. And that is by saying “yes” to the relationship.

Main Point

Say “yes” to the relationship.

Questions for Reflection

Grab a journal and take time working through the questions below.

  1. What are some of the biggest and most disagreeable positions, beliefs or ideas between the Church and the world?

  2. Why do you believe that people who are part of the church hold so firmly to these beliefs?

  3. Why/how do these strong beliefs or convictions cause relational gaps between “us” and “them”?

  4. Think about that person you are in tension with when it comes to a “stance” you have on “that thing.” Is it more important for ______ to agree with your position, or for _____ to come to know Jesus?

  5. What can you do to close the gap between your “stance” and that person relationally? How can you “say yes” to that person?

New Approach: Saying Yes

  • Get to know the other person. Listen to their story. Ask them questions.

  • Serve them. How can you show them love by serving?

  • Share your life with them. How can you be a part of their life?
