What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. – James 4:1-2a
Main Point
To fight right, you must first look in the mirror.
Message Recap
In a conflict, our hearts tend to go right to blaming the other person. But playing the “blame game” only escalates the situation. Someone needs to break the cycle. Where do we start? In order to fight right, we need to take a different approach. We must first look in the mirror.
Questions for Reflection
Grab a journal and take time working through the questions below.
When in a conflict, who do YOU typically focus on? Why?
Read James 4:1-2a. What are the authors trying to communicate in these passages? What causes tension in you?
Idol = Anything other than God that we trust to make us happy or secure. According to James, it’s our own desires and cravings that cause our conflicts. Many times, these desires and cravings are idols. If you were to name one idol that you have in your life, what would it be? And how have you seen this idol cause conflict in a relationship?
And anger is a signal that an idol is being poked. What continually causes you to flare up?
Matthew 7:3-5. When you are addressing a conflict, always start with a “log hunt.” Deal with the idols in your life first. 1) Identify the Idol, 2) Confess the Idol, and then 3) Replace the Idol. Where are you experiencing conflict in your life today?
Work through the three steps in question 5. Then finish this statement. “I desire ____. God today I’m choosing to find that in YOU alone.
