Who is Jesus?

He is God

The Bible doesn’t answer every question there is to know about life, but it does give us a definite answer to this question: who is Jesus? In the Bible, we see that Jesus claimed to be the divine Son of God sent from heaven to save us from our sins and transform our lives. He did this often without question. Jesus claims to be God are found in multiple passages of Scripture:

  • Jesus told His disciples, “I and the Father are one… Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 10:30, 14:9).

  • When a disciple of Jesus who doubted that Jesus had been raised from the dead, he met Jesus after the resurrection and declared, “My Lord and my God!” and Jesus accepted his declaration (John 20:28).

  • The enemies of Jesus knew that Jesus claimed to be God. And in one of those instances, they grabbed stones to try to kill Him “for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:33).

  • Jesus commends the apostle Peter’s confession of Him as “the Messiah, the Son of the Living God” (Matthew 16:16).

  • In the first four books of the New Testament, the writers of Scripture make it clear His disciples didn’t believe His claims in the beginning, but only gradually as they understood and accepted them later. It wasn’t until after His resurrection which proved without a doubt that Jesus Christ was who He claimed to be.

Why is Jesus different?

He proved it.

Many people throughout history have claimed to be divine, but Jesus proved his claim by predicting not only his death, but his resurrection three days later.

17 Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death 19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!” Matthew 20:17-19

After His resurrection, he was seen by and talked to a number of individuals and was seen by more than 500 people at the same time. (1 Corinthians 15:1-8)

Why does Jesus matter?

Jesus is the only way.

“I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6.

The Apostle Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament of the Bible, says in Romans 3:23 that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s standard, and in Romans 6:23 that the wages of sin is death—not just physical death, but spiritual death. The human consequence of sin is eternal separation from God, who is the Creator and Source of life. But, God has given us a way back to Him through Jesus. In Romans 5:8, Paul explains that God demonstrated His love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Jesus Christ died for us.

To be redeemed from our separation with God and to enter into a restored relationship with Him, all we have to do is receive Jesus’ death as the payment for our sins, believe He rose from the dead, and put our faith in Him by asking Him to be the forgiver of our sins and the leader of our lives from this point forward.

The moment we put our faith in Jesus, our sins are forgiven, we become a child of God, and we inherit eternal life with Him.

How do I put my faith in Jesus?

You can do that right now.

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10

If you would like to put your faith in Jesus by asking Him to be the forgiver of your sins, and leader of your life, simply quiet your mind and heart, and pray something like this…

Jesus, I’m praying this prayer right now because I know that I have been wrong in trying to live without You. I am sorry for that. Today, I confess that I am a sinner and I need a savior in order to be right with God. Because of your death and resurrection, I believe that you can be that savior. I am sorry for my sin and I ask for your forgiveness.

Today I’m placing my trust in you and I surrender my life to you now. Please be the Leader of my life from this day forward. Today I make you my Lord and my God. Help me believe in You and love You every day, and help me to show the world what You are like and how great Your love is. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Congratulations!

If you prayed something like that and believe it in your heart, you have just entered into a relationship with God through Jesus! Today your sins have been forgiven, you just became a child of God, and you have inherited eternal life with Him. Now that doesn’t mean all your questions will go away or that everything in your life will magically fall into place.
