Relentless: The Book of Acts | Week 2: Depending on the Spirit | June 10 - 16
Introduction
As we continue in the second week of our "Relentless" series, we take a look at the experience of the first followers of Jesus in receiving the Holy Spirit. Last week we saw that we should desire to have a relentless pursuit of God's Kingdom because of God's relentless pursuit of us. This week we see that God's relentless pursuit of us brings about our belief, at which point the Holy Spirit fills us. Our role is to continue the relentless pursuit of being filled by the Holy Spirit through devotion and asking, "What would You have me do?"
Main Point
To experience God's relentless power, we must be relentless about being filled with God's spirit.
Discussion Questions
  1. What are some of the "weird" things that come to mind when you think of Christianity?
  2. Share some of your preconceived notions or experiences surrounding being "filled" with the Holy Spirit.
  3. Open your Bibles and read Acts 2:1-4. Do your best to place yourself into that situation and experience. What are you anticipating? What are you hoping for? What is your reaction when the Holy Spirit comes? What do you do next?
  4. During the sermon Ronnie said, "We don't stay filled with the Holy Spirit by trying to get more of Him. We stay filled by being relentless about giving more of ourselves to Him." Process this reality with one another. Do you have any experiences, questions, or affirmations about this statement?
  5. Will you become relentlessly devoted to being filled with the Holy Spirit by asking, "What would You have me do?" Is there a step you can take this week to bring about this reality in your life?
Next Step Challenge
Though the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost has sometimes been construed as weird and unusual, the experience of those first followers of Jesus in receiving the power and indwelling of the Holy Spirit would shape the experiences we have with God today. As we engage with this very same Holy Spirit that is drawing us into the Kingdom of God as His laborers, let's together commit to asking, "What would You have me do?" As the Lord leads you this week, trust that the same God that gave languages to people they did not previously know is speaking into your heart according to His will and purpose.
Key Verse
Acts 2:1-4: When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
