T-Life Guide
Follow Me | Week 1: Jesus Says | January 14 - 20
Main Point: Jesus doesn't tell us to be believers or behavers. He invites us to be His followers.
Challenge Question: Are you following?
Key Verse: Matthew 9:9
Scripture References: Matthew 9:9-13
From Last Week ...
We celebrated the powerful transformation that Jesus is doing in and through Relevant. We celebrated with our friends and family who got baptized. We heard the stories of transformation from this past trimester. We remembered to remember all that God has done. Don't stop the celebration. Continue praising God for all that He has done and is yet to do!
Jesus extends an invitation asking us to follow Him. Following Jesus is not about obeying a list of rules or behaving a certain way. It's about having a relationship with Jesus and allowing Him to change you right where you are. Pursuing a religious "To Do" list or certain "right" behaviors is what the Pharisees did. Instead of following Jesus, they grew bitter, and accused Him of breaking all the rules. Consider the invitation Jesus offers to YOU. Are you observing or are you following?
Discussion Questions
  1. Talk about one of your favorite bosses, coaches, or teachers. What made it easy for you to follow that person?
  2. What has been your church experience in the past? Was following Jesus emphasized or doing what Jesus says? If you didn't grow up in "church", what did you assume Christianity was all about?
  3. Open your Bibles and read aloud Matthew 9:9-13. What is comforting and challenging about Jesus calling individuals regardless of their current behaviors or beliefs?
  4. During the sermon, Pastor Ronnie said, "Jesus doesn't tell us to be believers or behavers. He invites us to be His followers." What is the best part about following Jesus? In what ways are you growing in your relationship with Him? If you don't consider yourself a follower of Jesus, what's holding you back?
  5. As you go about your week, ask yourself, "Am I following?" What is one thing you can do this week to begin to follow Jesus or to follow Him more closely? What can this group do to support you?
Next Step Challenge
At the end of the day, the question isn't how far along your spiritual journey are you, but whether you're following Jesus or not. Begin tomorrow morning with this prayer, "Lord, where you lead, I will follow. Help me to do it."
Memory Verse
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. Matthew 9:9
