How to Be Rich: Living at 212° | Week 3: Giving Our First & Best | November 12 - 18
Main Point: Since we have more, we should serve more, and we should be more generous.
Challenge Question: Have you pre-decided to give God "your first"?
Key Verse: 1 Timothy 6:18
Scripture References: 1 Timothy 6:17-18
From Last Week ...
We were challenged last week to say everyday, "I will not trust in my riches, but in Him who richly provides." Often times our tendency is to trust the dollar amount in our bank account instead of trusting in God, the source of everything we have. What was challenging about trusting in God instead of riches this week and how did you overcome that challenge?
Introduction
It's easy to ignore the command to "be rich in good deeds" and to use our riches selfishly. We tend to wait to give when it's most convenient for us. We buy the best for ourselves, but give God our leftovers. We are commanded to be generous with what we've been given. Since God has given us more than we need, we should be generous in sharing our riches with others and serving one another.
Discussion Questions
  1. We've been asked to pray throughout this series about making, continuing, or increasing our 212 commitments. How has prayer been going in your life? What things have you noticed yourself praying more about either related to 212 or just in general?
  2. Have a few people share in your group about a time when you were given the best of something. How did that make you feel? Then share what it looks like to give God your "first" and your "best." Why is giving God our first and best important?
  3. Turn to 1 Timothy 6 and read aloud verses 17-18. Discuss as a whole group some creative ways you can practice generosity this month, whether it is meeting a current need within your group, another group or individual within Relevant, or within the community. How can you turn up the heat of your generosity together?
  4. Pastor Ronnie asked us on Sunday, "What's the best financial advice you ever received? Did you take it, and apply it?" Share the advice with the group.
  5. Think about your current financial giving. Have you pre-decided to give God "your first" or are you giving God the leftovers? How would giving God your first and best transform your life? Share with the person next to you.
Next Step Challenge
Next Sunday is Commitment Sunday. We have the opportunity to pre-decide to give God our first and best. This week, pray and ask God, "What would you have me do in regards to my generosity?" Those who are new to Relevant and have not engaged in the 212 Initiative, go before God over the next week and ask Him what he would have you do in regards to making a 212 commitment for the next 12 months. For those who have made a 212 commitment, ask God to help you finish strong in your commitment. And for those who have had an increase in faith or finances over the past year, you are challenged to go before God and ask Him if he is stretching you to take an even bigger step of faith in regards to your generosity. Trust that God will provide in every area of your life because it all belongs to Him anyway. Let's be generous together, be rich in good deeds, and share the riches that God has given us.
Memory Verse
Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 1 Timothy 6:18
