Living the Rest of Your Week
Introduction
As we continue our series through James, we have seen that we gauge our faith by how we work our faith. This week, we have begun to wrestle with one of the most telling and difficult conversations of faith...the Lord's will for our individual and corporate lives. As we consider the Lord's will, we first must acknowledge that it begins and ends with God's plan versus our own...we are called to live under His authority, in pursuit of His will, rather than our own. We test our faith by how we know and do the will of God. In answering, what is the will of God, four "G's" have been offered to test and know the will of God: 1) God, 2) Group, 3) Gauges, and 4) Gut. What does God say (Scripture)? What does my Group say (people you know and trust)? What do my gauges say (practical situations in your life)? What does my Gut say (the Holy Spirit speaking to our hearts and minds)? We know that God's will is bigger than us. It is about His Kingdom and His glory. When we align our will with His will through the 4 "G's" we can walk with confidence towards His Kingdom and His will for our lives.
Discussion Questions
  1. Last week we were challenged to look at the "tension" in our lives with other followers of Jesus and to seek understanding of our own personal contribution to that tension. We were challenged in confrontation to ask first "What do you need?" and "How can I help?" Share any conversations that were had or convictions you feel that you still need to take action on.
  2. The Lord's will...it's such a scary and weird conversation as we consider it for our own lives. Share your past experiences, beliefs, and conversations surrounding "the Lord's will."
  3. Share some examples or stories from your own life where you acted on the Lord's will or you know others who have acted on convictions they have felt from the Lord. What happened? How did transformation happen in their own lives and the lives of others around them?
  4. Read through the passage from Sunday together from James 4:13-17. As you read, share any promptings in your heart that God is causing. What plans are you currently making that He may be asking you to put before His throne? What decisions are you making in your daily life that comes out of self-will compared to God's will?
Moving Forward
This week we want to take practical steps to put into practice the 4 "G's" of discerning God's will (God, Group, Gauges, and Gut). As you consider these four different elements, which one stands out to you as one that you most need to engage. Are you spending consistent time with God through His Scriptures and allowing His Word to speak over your life (God)? Are you connected in a group of people who will seek the Lord's will with and for you together (Group)? Are you paying attention to the practical elements that God may be placing in your life to guide you towards His will (Gauges)? Are you considering the Holy Spirit and His promptings in your heart and mind (Gut)? After putting these items before the Lord, which specific question is He calling you to act upon? Share this prompting with another person or with your group. Put into place action steps over the next week that you can and will take in order to further align your life with His will.
The Word Speaking Life
"Instead you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.'" -James 4:15
